Today we say goodbye to an extraordinary human being, our friend Judson Wright — a devoted husband to Kelly, a loving father to Griffin, a proud dog dad to Phaedo, and a cornerstone of the Nelson backcountry community. Judson was far more than an ACMG ski guide or CAA professional. He was a gifted teacher, a generous mentor, and a natural leader whose mission was always the same: to make the mountains safer, smarter, and more connected for everyone.
When he founded Kootenay Backcountry Guides, Judson envisioned a place that would be more than a guiding service. He built a community hub for learning, sharing conditions, offering safety insights, and reminding people how to move thoughtfully through the mountains. His videos on YouTube and Instagram were heartfelt acts of service, created out of genuine care for the people who spent time in the backcountry. Judson was also essential to the growth of State of the Snowpack, helping it expand from a small local gathering into a national movement.
His dedication made avalanche education accessible, and his encouragement empowered countless guides to share knowledge and strengthen their own regions. Anyone who skied with him, played music with him, or simply shared a conversation knows the kind of person he was — humble, authentic, compassionate, and always willing to help. He reminded us that in the end, it’s just skiing or riding; that tough days make good days better; and that human connection matters most.
Judson’s impact is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to guide us. State of the Snowpack will honor his mission by inspiring others to lead with generosity, curiosity, and care.
